Stereotype threat as a barrier to women entering engineering careers

Theory suggests that proximal contextual variables contribute to women's underrepresentation in STEM fields. We therefore examined relationships between stereotype threat as a proximal contextual variable and academic self-efficacy. We also examined the influence of self-efficacy for coping with educational barriers on those relationships. A total of 211 women undergraduate students majoring in engineering fields (73% White, mean age = 21 years) responded to measures of stigma consciousness and stereotype vulnerability as proxies for stereotype threat, along with measures of self-efficacy for coping with barriers (CWB) and academic self-efficacy. Stigma consciousness (in the form of awareness of sexism and negative attitudes about women), but not stereotype vulnerability, negatively related to women's confidence in their abilities to complete a college degree in a engineering major field. Results of a moderation model indicated a significant interaction of CWB and stigma consciousness on academic self efficacy, with no such interaction effect for stereotype vulnerability. Our findings add to the proximal contextual barriers framework within Social Cognitive Career Theory by uncovering the existence of negative relationships between consciousness of discrimination due to group identity and academic self-efficacy. Promoting positive identity and constructive interaction with the environment may support women's career development in engineering fields. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB-BASED SCALABLE INTERVENTION TO REDUCE MENTAL HEALTH RISKS IN MEDICAL EXAMINER PERSONNEL

This paper describes the development of a scalable intervention to reduce risk for depression and posttraumatic stress among medical examiner employees. Medical examiners identify the deceased, determine the cause and manner of death, and communicate this information to various stakeholders including law enforcement, public health authorities, and families of victims. Basic research has revealed that aspects of their job responsibilities, including working on disturbing cases and interacting with highly distressed families of the deceased, are associated with symptoms of depression and posttraumatic stress, and these relationships are partly mediated by concerns about alienation and distress intolerance. However, employees do not receive systematic training in the skills needed to manage the emotional labor demands associated with work responsibilities. To address these unmet needs, a pilot study was conducted to develop a scalable, web-based intervention to decrease symptoms of depression and posttraumatic distress. The intervention consisted of self-paced programed intervention modules based on empirically validated treatments including psychoeducation, social modeling, values affirmation, exposure, and skills training tailored to the specific job demands of medical examiners. The program was delivered to personnel in nine offices in six states. Consumer satisfaction data indicate that participants found the intervention, including the exercises, clear and useful. Overall, 53% of the employees who consented to participate enrolled in at least one class and half of them completed eight or more of 16 classes. The program is feasible to administer in the workplace and shows preliminary evidence of efficacy. Employees demonstrated a reduction in depressive symptoms over time.

"Scarless" Inguinal Herniorrhaphy
hernia repair; herniorrhaphy; Inguinal herniorrhaphy; outcomes; Robotic herniorrhaphy; Single-site surgery; Surgery; TAPP; tep
Introduction: Laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy is widely accepted. Robotic-assisted surgery provides improved 3-dimensional visualization and enhanced dexterity. The purpose of this case series was to demonstrate the feasibility of a modified, robotic, single-site, unilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy. Technique: Six patients 18 years of age or older with a body mass index <35 provided informed consent and underwent hernia repair with a modified herniorrhaphy technique from January to July 2014. Eight patients were screened and six case experiences are described in this series. The da Vinci Si robot, gel port, and instruments (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, California, USA) were used. With the patient in Trendelenburg position, a 25-mm incision was made within the umbilicus. The fascia was incised, and the peritoneal cavity was entered. A robotic cholecystectomy gel port was placed. Robotic instruments were inserted, and the robot was docked. A preperitoneal flap was raised on the affected side with the robotic instruments used interchangeably. The hernia sac was identified and reduced, and the mesh was tacked in place. The preperitoneal flap was tacked back in place. The robot was undocked, the abdomen was desufflated, and the fascia was closed. Discussion: Single-site unilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy was performed for 6 patients. All patients were discharged the same day, had good aesthetic results, and experienced no hernia recurrence. Robotic single-site gel port inguinal herniorrhaphy is feasible and appears as safe and time efficient as laparoscopic herniorrhaphy in this small group.
