Using and interpreting electrodiagnostic tests.
Electrodiagnostic testing, consisting of nerve conduction studies and needle electrode examination, serves as an extension of a neurologic examination for evaluating a variety of focal and generalized neuromuscular conditions. By providing important clues on location, chronicity, severity, and pathophysiology, it can help to establish a diagnosis, evaluate the need for surgery, and assess patients who do not improve as expected after surgery.

Occupational asthma is an all-encompassing term that describes asthma derived from, worsened by, or encountered in an occupational setting. The diagnosis can be elusive and is easily confused with other disorders. Nevertheless, clarity of the diagnosis is essential for legal purposes. To best serve the patient, it is important to be familiar with the legal distinctions as well as proper medical management techniques.

The epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is undergoing a transformation as isolates of this historically health care-associated pathogen are reported with increasing frequency in otherwise healthy community-dwelling individuals. This article provides a brief review of the differences between health care-associated and community-acquired MRSA and discusses the potential impact of the changing epidemiology of MRSA on the hospital setting.

For the primary infection of genital herpes, antiviral therapy with acyclovir is the gold standard. For recurrences, there are two options: antiviral treatment of each outbreak as it arises, or suppression of outbreaks with daily oral therapy. Patients tend to prefer the latter because it can decrease the number and severity of outbreaks, but it increases asymptomatic viral shedding and, therefore, the risk of unwittingly transmitting herpes simplex virus to uninfected sexual partners.
