Description
An account of the resource
This is the first genome-wide association study with the Hybrid Mouse Diversity Panel (HDMP) to define the genetic landscape of the variation in the suprathreshold wave 1 amplitude of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) both pre- and post-noise exposure. This measure is correlated with the density of the auditory neurons (AN) and/or the compliment of synaptic ribbons within the inner hair cells of the mouse cochlea. We analyzed suprathreshold ABR for 635 mice from 102 HMDP strains pre- and post-noise exposure (108 dB 10 kHz octave band noise exposure for 2 h) using auditory brainstem response (ABR) wave 1 suprathreshold amplitudes as part of a large survey (Myint et al., Hear Res 332:113-120, 2016). Genome-wide significance levels for pre- and post-exposure wave 1 amplitude across the HMDP were performed using FaST-LMM. Synaptic ribbon counts (Ctbp2 and mGluR2) were analyzed for the extreme strains within the HMDP. ABR wave 1 amplitude varied across all strains of the HMDP with differences ranging between 2.42 and 3.82-fold pre-exposure and between 2.43 and 7.5-fold post-exposure with several tone burst stimuli (4 kHz, 8 kHz, 12 kHz, 16 kHz, 24 kHz, and 32 kHz). Immunolabeling of paired synaptic ribbons and glutamate receptors of strains with the highest and lowest wave 1 values pre- and post-exposure revealed significant differences in functional synaptic ribbon counts. Genome-wide association analysis identified genome-wide significant threshold associations on chromosome 3 (24 kHz; JAX00105429;p < 1.12E-06) and chromosome 16 (16 kHz; JAX00424604;p < 9.02E-07) prior to noise exposure and significant associations on chromosomes 2 (32 kHz; JAX00497967;p < 3.68E-08) and 13 (8 kHz; JAX00049416; 1.07E-06) after noise exposure. In order to prioritize candidate genes, we generatedcis-eQTLs from microarray profiling of RNA isolated from whole cochleae in 64 of the tested strains. This is the first report of a genome-wide association analysis, controlled for population structure, to explore the genetic landscape of suprathreshold wave 1 amplitude measurements of the mouse ABR. We have defined two genomic regions associated with wave 1 amplitude variation prior to noise exposure and an additional two associated with variation after noise exposure.

Description
An account of the resource
Experienced happiness and reported life contentment represent cardinal elements of subjective well-being (SWB). Achieving happiness and contentment with work and other domains, such as love, play, and community, constitute fundamental life goals. Career construction offers a developmental theory of vocational behavior and a career assessment and counseling model counselors can use to promote client SWB. As an intervention model, career construction assists individuals with using work to foster self-completion and derive meaning, satisfaction, and happiness as they design their lives. Career construction counseling promotes SWB because its aims are consistent with increasing both immediate life satisfaction and overall life contentment. The present analysis describes the basic principles and practice of career construction and explains the career style interview as an assessment and counseling method useful for assisting individuals to identify and pursue self-selected goals and projects, endeavors that contribute to SWB.

Description
An account of the resource
This review examines the literature on personality and medical specialty choice. First, it describes studies categorized by medical specialties that to date have used the same measures: Adjective Check List, California Psychological Inventory, Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Then it integrates these results using the framework provided by the Five-Factor Model of personality. This model provides a method to organize the personality descriptors associated with medical specialties and to summarize information in ail understandable mid meaningful way. Conclusions drawn from the review Suggest 0 a loose association between a few personality factors and particular medical specialties. Recommendations for further research on personality and medical specialities encourage shifting from the "variable" to the "person" approach and studying how different personalities succeed in the same specialty.

Description
An account of the resource
This study investigated differences in personality patterns between person-oriented and technique-oriented physicians. It tested an integrative framework by converting the scores on the Personality Research Form (PRF) to the Big-Five factors and built a predictive model of group membership in clinical specialty area. PRF scores from 238 physicians (153 person-oriented and 85 technique-oriented) were used for this retrospective study. Significant personality differences between group means existed for seven of the traits on the PRF and two Big-Five factors. Results of a stepwise discriminant analysis indicated that two PRF traits and one Big-Five factor had the greatest ability to discriminate between person-oriented and technique-oriented physicians. Findings of this study provide support for establishing personality profiles of physicians interested in person-oriented versus technique-oriented specialties. Examining personality differences among male and female physicians is discussed as an area for future research. (c) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Description
An account of the resource
Research rarely considers the combined influence of personality traits and values in predicting behavioral outcomes. We aimed to advance a germinal line of inquiry that addresses this gap by separately and simultaneously examining personality traits and physician work values to predict medical specialty choice. First-year medical students (125 women and 119 men) responded to measures of personality and physician work values. After graduation, participants' residency choices were identified. Results indicated that personality traits predict person- or technique-oriented medical specialty choice. Physician work values, whether used alone or in tandem with personality traits, however, did not significantly predict specialty choice. Implications for practice and research are discussed. Description
An account of the resource
Models of career maturity first formulated at midcentury, have been criticized for not incorporating innovations in personality and developmental psychology. This isolation from general models of and debates about personal maturity has kept career maturity from receiving widespread acceptance in mainstream psychology. The present Study investigated whether Super's model of career maturity could be linked to Cough's three-dimensional model of personality organization. To explore relations between the two structural models, 206 college students responded to Cough's California Psychological Inventory and Super's Career Development Inventory. Results showed that planful competence in career development related to greater realization of one's potential and a higher degree of social adjustment. Furthermore, the results indicated that more Mature attitudes toward career planning and exploration related to air adjustment style characterized by extroversion in interpersonal relationships and by a positive orientation to social norms.
