Description

Mitochondria are the center for oxidative phosphorylation, metabolism, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the cell and home for several proapoptotic proteins. Therefore, tight regulation of mitochondrial health and function is essential for cellular homeostasis and survival. Deregulation of mitochondrial function and dynamics is associated with degenerative diseases including osteoarthritis (OA), but the detailed mechanism behind mitochondrial dysfunction remains elusive. Mitochondrial network is a dynamic structure that undergoes a continuous cycle of fission and fusion which is important for the maintenance of mitochondrial health and function. Here we studied the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics by dynamin related protein 1 (DRP1 also known as DNM1L) and its association with mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis in chondrocyte under pathological conditions.
