Description

Escherichia coli seldom causes pneumonia. In 1967 Tillotson and Lerner [1] reported 20 cases of pneumonia caused by E. coli. They concluded that E. coli pneumonia generally followed bacteremia seeded from acute or chronic infections of the gastrointestinal or genitourinary tract. None of their patients had an underlying colonic malignancy. Our case report involves a man who presented with hematogenous bacteremic E. coli pneumonia. Upon investigation he was found to have an asymptomatic invasive adenocarcinoma of the colon.
