Description

The purpose of this paper is to discuss how failure rates are influenced by I) normversus criterion-referenced scoring, 2) case specificity and case weights, and 3) compensatory and conjunctive standards. This paper will highlight comparisons of student performance using passing scores from three different standard setting procedures. The comparisons are as follows: 1) norm-referenced passing scores versus criterion-referenced passing scores, 2) weighted versus nonweighted passing scores, 3) equally weighted versus unequally weighted cases, and 4) compensatory versus conjunctive pass/fail decisions. Practical issues will be introduced.
