Description
The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) recently published updated guidelines for assessing and treating patients with community-acquired pneumonia. In contrast to the common practice of treating patients on the basis of clinical manifestations alone, the IDSA recommends using chest films and microbiologic tests (including Gram's stain and culture of expectorated sputum) to confirm the diagnosis and to identify specific pathogens. Finding the causative organism helps physicians choose the best therapy and minimize side effects.
